8 1/2 x 6", 38 p.+ adverts, A seminal paper in the world of civil engineering. Baumann was the first to publish a theory for improving the construction of tall buildings, i.e., skyscrapers. His idea was to erect a firm and rigid skeleton, or hull of iron, and cover it at once with a proper roof. The iron uprights were to carry the enclosing veneer of stone, terra cotta, or brick. The original paper is scarce as hen's teeth. For this copy, it appears that friends got together and reproduced a facsimilie which was subsequently nicewly bound in cloth and presented to the well-known engineer, Ralph B. Peck in May of 1941. It also includes the 8 pages of advertisements that were at the rear of the original paper, and (curiously) the title page and frontispiece for a work by F. B. Wilkie entitled, "Walks About Chicago", (1869). Overall -- an unusual, one-off item in wonderful condition.
